Where Americans Actually Live in Spain

Not a listicle. This is Spain's official census, mapped: every one of the country's 8,132 municipalities, shaded and ranked by how many U.S.-born residents actually live there.

Key findings

As of 2025, 76,180 U.S.-born residents live in Spain — up +40% from 54,406 in 2021 (INE census, table 66322).
Americans cluster in two places: big cities (Madrid 14,538, Barcelona 9,237, Valencia 3,452) and a handful of affluent suburbs and coastal towns.
The single most American town in Spain is Rota, Cádiz — 17.7 U.S.-born per 1,000 residents.
It's the affluent suburbs, not just the coast: Madrid's Pozuelo de Alarcón runs 8.2 per 1,000 — corporate and family Americans, not retirees.

How to read this map — honestly

We count residents born in the USA, not U.S. citizens.

That overcounts American citizenship by roughly a third. The census measures country of birth, so our 76,180 figure includes U.S.-born people who are Spanish citizens — most importantly the U.S.-born children of Spanish emigrants who returned home. That effect is strongest in Galicia and Asturias, where a high per-capita U.S.-born count can mean returned families, not American settlers.

It also has a floor, not a ceiling: second-generation blindness. A U.S. citizen who moved here and raised children born in Spain shows up once, not as a household. And a handful of birth countries sit in residual "other" buckets we can't split. We show birth-of-country anyway because it's the one honest, town-level, annually-updated number that exists — and we tell you exactly where it bends.
