Why people fall for Valldemossa

Portrait drawn from The Rough Guide.

10km southwest of Deià, in a lovely valley with a mountain backdrop.

Worth the trip

  • The Real Cartuja de Valldemossa monastery, the island's most-visited building after Palma Catedral
  • The cells where George Sand and Chopin lived for four months in 1838-39

A little history

Founded in the early 14th century when the asthmatic King Sancho built a royal palace in these hills for the easier air; in 1399 it passed to Carthusian monks who converted it into a monastery.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
