Úbeda

A World Heritage-listed casco antiguo where beautiful Renaissance buildings grace almost every street — one of the few places in Andalucía with stunning architecture not built by the Moors.

Why people fall for Úbeda

Portrait drawn from Lonely Planet, the Michelin Green Guide & The Rough Guide.

9km east of Baeza, built on the same escarpment overlooking the Guadalquivir valley.

On the table. Top-class restaurants and tapas bars.

Worth the trip

  • Plaza de Vázquez de Molina, a tremendous Renaissance square, one of the most impressive of its kind on the peninsula
  • The Palacio de las Cadenas, with a facade fronted by monumental lions
  • Capilla del Salvador, a masterpiece with a dazzling Plateresque facade by Vandelvira/Diego de Siloé

A little history

Úbeda's aristocratic lions jockeyed for influence at the Habsburg court in the 16th century; Francisco de los Cobos y Molina became state secretary to King Carlos I.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
