Tordesillas
A quiet riverside town boasting an important place in world history — here the 1494 treaty divided the New World between Spain and Portugal.
Why people fall for Tordesillas
Portrait drawn from The Rough Guide.
30km southwest of Valladolid.
Worth the trip
- The Real Monasterio de Santa Clara, 'The Alhambra of Castile', originally a royal palace with delightful Mudéjar architecture
- A long medieval bridge across the Río Duero
- An arcaded Plaza Mayor of faded red-brick buildings
A little history
The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) divided the New World between Spain and Portugal along a line 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands; Juana la Loca was later imprisoned for half a century in a palace here.
Who it suits: History travellers
Who Tordesillas is for — and who it isn't
Not our opinion: we ran the same scoring engine behind the quiz for six settler profiles across all 8,132 municipalities and read off where Tordesillas lands.
Tordesillas is mid-pack for all six profiles we score (between the 58th and 80th percentile) — a solid all-rounder, a standout for nobody. Your own priorities may read it differently: that's what the quiz is for.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
