Mojácar
Eastern Almería's main resort — a striking white-cube hill village revived from ghost-town status by a 1960s free-land scheme, now backed by a lively beach strip.
Why people fall for Mojácar
Portrait drawn from The Rough Guide.
Mojácar Pueblo, the hill village, sits a couple of km back from the sea on a rocky outcrop; Mojácar Playa is the beach development below.
Worth the trip
- Mojácar Pueblo's cubist white houses wrapped round a rocky outcrop
- A long, excellent sandy beach at Mojácar Playa with warm, clear water
A little history
A near-ghost town by the 1960s, until its mayor offered free land to anyone who would build within a year, attracting an artists' colony later supplanted by package-holiday companies.
Who it suits: Summer beach holidaymakers · Foreign second-homers

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
