Llívia
A geographical oddity — a Spanish enclave inside France since 1659 — with a medieval aura that deepens the higher you climb its steep streets.
Why people fall for Llívia
Portrait drawn from The Rough Guide.
Just 6km from Puigcerdà, surrounded by French territory.
Worth the trip
- Mare de Déu dels Àngels, a fifteenth-century church with Doric columns and a Baroque retablo
Fiestas
- The Llívia music festival (since 1982), held on August weekends, once featuring Montserrat Caballé
A little history
In 1659 the town officially became a Spanish enclave within France — though Spain ceded 33 villages to France that year, tiny Llívia, deemed a town, remained Spanish.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
