Carmona
A small, picturesque town made recognizable by a Giralda-imitation bell tower, sharing much of Seville's history at a fraction of its scale.
Why people fall for Carmona
Portrait drawn from The Rough Guide.
On a low hill overlooking a fertile plain, less than 30km from Seville.
On the table. A bustling fruit and vegetable market most mornings in the Plaza del Mercado.
Worth the trip
- The fifteenth-century tower of the Iglesia de San Pedro, built in imitation of the Giralda
- A fascinating subterranean Roman necropolis
- The Puerta de Sevilla entrance to the walled casco antiguo
A little history
It was an important Roman city, under the Moors often governed by a brother of the Sevillan ruler; Pedro the Cruel later built a palace within its castle as a 'provincial' royal residence.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
