Why people fall for Alquézar

Portrait drawn from the Michelin Green Guide.

Built on the edge of a canyon along the Río Vero.

Worth the trip

  • Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, built on the site of a 9th-century Arab alcázar (Al-Qasr, giving the village its name), with a beautiful 12th-century Romanesque Christ
  • Prehistoric rock paintings nearby at Abrigo de Arpán and Tozal de Mallata
  • Some 70 canyons carved into the limestone, making Sierra de Guara y Cañones the Pyrenees' most sought-after canyoning spot

A little history

In the 9th century the Arabs built an alcázar, Al-Qasr, which gave the village its name, later taken by King Sancho Ramírez around 1067.

Who Alquézar is for — and who it isn't

Not our opinion: we ran the same scoring engine behind the quiz for six settler profiles across all 8,132 municipalities and read off where Alquézar lands.

Alquézar is mid-pack for all six profiles we score (between the 52nd and 69th percentile) — a solid all-rounder, a standout for nobody. Your own priorities may read it differently: that's what the quiz is for.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
