Albarracín

How many of Spain's many pretty villages can match gorgeous Albarracín? Rose-hued, half-timbered, geranium-balconied houses overhang twisting streets on a rocky promontory — once the seat of an independent Berber dynasty.

Why people fall for Albarracín

Portrait drawn from Lonely Planet & The Rough Guide.

Built on a high rocky promontory above a loop of the Río Guadalaviar.

Worth the trip

  • Age-old fortifications climbing the surrounding hills
  • The Catedral and Museo Diocesano, with an eye-catching gilded altarpiece
  • Hundreds of big boulders scattered around the rocky countryside, drawing climbers from across Europe

A little history

The Banu Razin clan of Berbers ruled here as an independent dynasty from 1013 to 1104, and the tiny statelet was not subsumed into Aragón until 1284/1333.

Who Albarracín is for — and who it isn't

Not our opinion: we ran the same scoring engine behind the quiz for six settler profiles across all 8,132 municipalities and read off where Albarracín lands.

Albarracín is mid-pack for all six profiles we score (between the 48th and 72nd percentile) — a solid all-rounder, a standout for nobody. Your own priorities may read it differently: that's what the quiz is for.

Numbers: SpainScore town dataset, derived from INE, AEMET, Mitma and the Catastro. Percentile chips count only the municipalities that report the figure — the "of n" says how many. Region-ranked figures (PISA, surgical waits) compare Spain's 17 comunidades autónomas. A blank means no municipal-level figure is published — not a zero.
